Music video PowerPoint

For our music video analysis the aspects which I will concentrate on will be mise-en-scene and camera and angles, the mise-en-scene includes lighting, props and colour. To do this I will be watching the sex on fire video a number of times and making notes on what I see, when I watch the video I will concentrate entirely on 1 aspect at a time so I cover everything I can on the certain area. I will watch the video without sound as I do not have to write about the lyrics and music it is also so I do not get sidetracked by just listening to the music.

Music video analysis

In groups we have been given the task of creating a PowerPoint presentation on a music video, the music video my group is creating the PowerPoint on is the Kings of Leon song 'sex on fire'.

To analyse the video we have each chosen to create slides on certain elements of the video before combining them together to create the final presentation, to analyse the video we will take into account the aspects of the music and genre, how the music and video link together, the lyrics of the song, mise-en-scene, camera and angles, editing and narrative and themes.

Music tribes and culture

Over the next few lessons I will be researching and publishing information about music tribes and the culture associated with them, to do this I will be using existing information from my AS blog http://sam-holytrc.blogspot.com/ along with any new information I find while searching.

Mise-en-scene

The mise-en-secen changes depending on the genre of the music video and its' style.

Props:

This can be anything from band merchandise the actual performance equipment.

Costumes:

Most genres have specific costumes used in videos, this helps to re-inforce the music genre.

Location:

Location of the video can play an important role, the locations used tie in with the music e.g. streets and concert halls.

Facial expressions:

The facial expressions artists use in their video's help to create a music feel depending on the genre.

Editing and Sound

There are many different editing techniques used in music videos.

Most music videos feature jump cutting, this means that the scene changes very quickly and keeps the audience interested in the video. The footage in music videos is usually edited to match the music being played, some videos use CGI in their video's as well as split screens to help give their video an interesting and different appearence. Certain music producers choose to include diegetic sound in their videos to help create a sense of realism and to help connect with the audience, changes in the level of sound throughout a video can signify many things, a change in the tempo could mean the main part of the song is about to start.

Camera

There are a variety of camera angles used in music videos depending on the genre of music and the style of the video.

Most music video's use a lot of close up's especially in performance video's, they sometimes use extreme close up's of the artist/band's lips and guitars being strummed. Crane shots usually hover above the stage showing a complete shot of the artist/band to the audience, pans and tilts are used to move from one performer to another unless it is a solo artist.

Music video styles

Performance:

This is when the video is solely based on the band/artisit playing.

Narrative:

This is when a music video tells a story.

Mixture:

This is when the video is both performance and narrative based.

Cameo:

The band/artist features in the narrative but doesn't perform.

Animation:

The video is entirley digital.
